Can you hear me now? Originally uploaded by ricmcarthur One of our local chippers found his way into the feeder and it looks like his cheeks are going to explode. I like the way he's holding on with his left "hand".

DUNLIN

Image
DUNLIN Originally uploaded by ricmcarthur A small flock - 50 birds- of dunlin were feeding beside the road at a marsh just outside of Rondeau Provincial Park. The kept on feeding and just ignored the bird watchers. This marsh was all phragmities last. year. A removal experiment was started in the fall and so far wildlife has been returning. Egrets, GBH, Shovelers, osprey and now dunlin are being seen where there was nothing before.

Magnolia Warbler

Image
Magnolia Warbler Originally uploaded by ricmcarthur Spring migration brings such beautiful birds through our area. They can be hard to see and you are subject to "warbler neck". Literally a pain in the neck from looking up at the tops of trees.

Colour in motion

Colour in motion Originally uploaded by ricmcarthur This Rose Breasted Grosbeak was trying to get seeds from one of our feeders. The landing area was to small so he did his humming grosbeak act.

Orchard oriole

Image
Orchard oriole Originally uploaded by ricmcarthur Thie orchard oriole has been frequenting our yard. Unusual for us, we seldom see an orchard. Lots of Baltimores. Last night we had orchard and baltimore orioles on the feeder along with red bellied and red headed woodpeckers and a few male goldfinchres for good measure. The colour bouquet was amazing.

Northern water thrush

Image
Northern water thrush Originally uploaded by ricmcarthur He's a little Skulker, likes still water and eats bugs. Yummy. Migration is in full swing. There have been 22 warbler species in the park along with various shore birds, gulls and terns, sparrows, oriloes and much more If you live near Rondeau this would be a good weekend to visit.

Alas, poor Yorick! I knew him, Horatio; Originally uploaded by ricmcarthur I had to look up the actual quote. For years I thought it was "ALas poor Yorick, I knew him well." Evidentley this racoon didn't make it throught the winter. At least I think it is a racoon.

Darwin at Work

Sometimes age, testosterone and alcohol aren’t the best mix. It often ends up with a comment along the lines of “it seemed like a good idea at the time.” These stout fellows decided to go for a polar bear style swim. The ice was still in the marina, so they used the handy rocks lining the boat basin to try to break the ice. The marina owner eventually came along and threw them out. This guy got style points for the lean. After talking to them I could only shake my head. Two of them couldn’t swim. Never do anything you don’t want to explain to the paramedics.
