Oct 27, 2022, just outside Rondeau Provincial Park. Taken at the Magic Brook at friend David's stream. We had 15 in our stream while I was out on my bike ride but they were seen by another birder who was checking the yard. Coccothraustes vespertinus. The Evening Grosbeak is a songbird without a song—that is, it does not seem to use any complex sounds to attract a mate or defend its territory. Rondeau Provincial Park, Ontario, Canada, Nov 2, 2020. Usually these birds move in flocks, but we have just one in the yard. It has been around for several days now. Evening grosbeak, Rondeau Provincial Park, Ontario, Canada, Nov 25, 2018. Not a regular visitor to Rondeau but they showed up this year. We had a few stop in the yard for about 5 minutes then they were off again. Coccothraustes vespertinus Though they’re ferocious seed-crackers in the wintertime, in summer Evening Grosbeaks eat insects such as spruce budworm, a serious forest pest. Almost missed them, I was working on the computer and looked out the window and spotted them on a sunflower feeder. Taken through a window. Coccothraustes vespertinus With their enormous bills, Evening Grosbeaks can crush seeds that are too large for Common Redpolls and Pine Siskins to open. Full of evening grosbeaks , a photo by ricmcarthur on Flickr. We have had an influx of evening grosbeaks today. We had two or three earlier in the week. They don't come into our area often however this seems to be one of the times. Taken through the dirty double pained wonderful wildlife window in poor light.
