Red[legged partridge , a photo by ricmcarthur on Flickr. On our trip to Spain last May we saw a red-legged partridge at the roadside. Usually they run away from danger rather than flying. As they are considered to be a game bird hiding in the grass and bushes is probably safer than making yourself a target in the air.
