Grey squirrel, Dec25, 2020, Rondeau Provincial Park, Ontario, Canada. Our yard attracts many squirrels, they clean up under the feeders and when they can the clean the feeders right out. The North American Grey squirrel is native to this area of Southern Ontario and these animals occur in grey or black, and sometimes their fur has a reddish tinge. Its belly is often white and it has a large bushy tail. Particularly in urban areas where the risk of predation is reduced, both white and black coloured varieties are quite often found.

It can survive on fruit alone for several months. Brown-headed Cowbirds that are raised in Cedar Waxwing nests typically don’t survive, in part because the cowbird chicks can’t develop on such a high-fruit diet.
