The weather has been terrible for the harvest this year, almost t continuous rain.

Sparrows etc don’t go near the pile. As soon as it is cleared the will go and root around in the gravel to find seeds.
Perhaps so much food overwhelms the birds to the point they don’t recognize it as a food source.

I have always wondered why birds don't attack those big piles of grain. Maybe you're right--it just seems like a big mound of sand or something; only when they can see the little kernels/grains do they realize what it is. Interesting.

I watched them for a while and thought it was odd.
If you took a city slicker and dropped them into the middle of 5000 acres of wheat they probably wouldn't recognize it as food. Bread, don't you know.
Maybe they see it as a threat? Like a huge pile of sand that may suck them down?

Could be Susan. One other thing I heard is that it shifts around and that may scare them off.
