American redstart


 

Not sure if this was a breeding display for the female that was in the yard or an aggression display to keep other birds out of his bath.

Either way it is a beautiful bird.

The male American Redstart sometimes has two mates at the same time. While many other polygamous bird species involve two females nesting in the same territory, the redstart holds two separate territories that can be separated by a quarter-mile. The male begins attracting a second female after the first has completed her clutch and is incubating the eggs.

Okay this is weird; I’ll give you that right up front. We got Maggie from an animal shelter so we don’t know her background. We have found out that, if you don’t latch the bathroom door securely, Maggie will come crashing in to visit. She promptly climbs into your pants and makes herself comfortable. Cap May warbler.

  A handsome bird still in spring plumage.  It was our only warbler today. Rondeau Provincial Park, Ontario, Canada, August 20, 2025. Setophaga tigrina.  The average clutch size of the Cape May Warbler (6 eggs) is greater than that of other warblers. This large clutch size may allow Cape May Warbler populations to expand rapidly during outbreaks of their preferred prey, spruce budworms.

Folded rocks.

One of the interesting yet unadvertised sites in Newfoundland is the folded rocks near Port aux Port. You have to ask locals exactly where they are and how to get to them but it is worth the effort. This formation is also called the Faults & Folds of West Bay Beach. "The folds of rock are related to the churning tectonic activity that gave rise to the earth's mantle hundreds of millions of year ago." For scale I am about 6 feet tall.
