Black and white warbler

In our water feature, Rondeau Provincial Park, Ontario, Canada, Sept 14, 2021.


The fall migration is continuing, 6 species at the water today.
Mniotilta varia
As warblers go, Black-and-white Warblers are combative: they’ll attack and fight with other species that enter their territory, including Black-capped Chickadees, Red-breasted Nuthatches, and American Redstarts. This aggressive behavior extends to the wintering grounds, where they defend territories and when feeding in mixed flocks will drive other Black-and-white Warblers away.

Okay this is weird; I’ll give you that right up front. We got Maggie from an animal shelter so we don’t know her background. We have found out that, if you don’t latch the bathroom door securely, Maggie will come crashing in to visit. She promptly climbs into your pants and makes herself comfortable. Cap May warbler.

  A handsome bird still in spring plumage.  It was our only warbler today. Rondeau Provincial Park, Ontario, Canada, August 20, 2025. Setophaga tigrina.  The average clutch size of the Cape May Warbler (6 eggs) is greater than that of other warblers. This large clutch size may allow Cape May Warbler populations to expand rapidly during outbreaks of their preferred prey, spruce budworms.

Folded rocks.

One of the interesting yet unadvertised sites in Newfoundland is the folded rocks near Port aux Port. You have to ask locals exactly where they are and how to get to them but it is worth the effort. This formation is also called the Faults & Folds of West Bay Beach. "The folds of rock are related to the churning tectonic activity that gave rise to the earth's mantle hundreds of millions of year ago." For scale I am about 6 feet tall.
