Gray catbird, close-up

 A pond visitor today, Rondeau Provincial Park, Ontario, Canada, May 31, 2024. Dumetella carolinensis The Gray Catbird belongs to the genus  Dumetella , which means “small thicket.” And that’s exactly where you should go look for this little skulker.

Northern flicker

 Had both male and female flicker in the yard today, landed on the same stump. Female flicker Male flicker Five of seven possible woodpeckers in the yard today. Flickers in the northern parts of their range move south for the winter, although a few individuals often stay rather far north.

Magnolia warbler.

 Male magnolia t the pond, a striking bird, not rare but we hear it more than see it during migration. Rondeau Provincial Park, Ontario, Canada, May 24, 2024. Setophaga magnolia In 1810, Alexander Wilson collected a warbler from a magnolia tree in Mississippi, giving it the English name "Black-and-yellow Warbler" and "magnolia" for the scientific species name, which became the common name over time.

Mourning warbler.

 Rondeau Provincial Park, Ontario, Canada, May 22, 2024. One we don't get to see very often so it is always a pleasure when one shows up. Geothlypis philadelphia.  Mourning Warblers are bright but hard-to-see birds of brushy areas. Among the most renowned skulkers of the warbler family, they are common but seldom seen, particularly during migration and winter, when they are quiet.   source -allaboutbirds-org.

Blackpoll Warbler,

May 20, 2024, Rondeau Provincial ParkOntario, Canada. Usually have trouble seeing this tree topping bird, never mind photographing one. This male came down for a bath in the small water feature The sharply marked Blackpoll Warbler is nature’s hearing test, with a high-pitched, almost inaudible song that floats through the boreal forests of Canada. This long-distance athlete weighs less than half an ounce yet makes the longest overwater journey of any songbird—nearly 1,800 miles nonstop over the Atlantic Ocean to its wintering grounds. In the fall, this black-and-white warbler molts into yellow-green plumage and loses its black cap. Although still numerous, it has lost an estimated 88% of its population in the last 40 years. source -allaboutbirds-org

 Warblers all over our yard at rondeau Provincial Park, Ontario, Canada, May 14, 2024. We had 16 species of warbler and I got images of the majority of them. Bay breasted. Northern cardinal

 In the late day sunlight this cardinal sat in the bush above our little water feature. Rondeau Provincial Park, May 10, 2024. Cardinalis cardinalis Only a few female North American songbirds sing, but the female Northern Cardinal does, and often while sitting on the nest. This may give the male information about when to bring food to the nest. A mated pair shares song phrases, but the female may sing a longer and slightly more complex song than the male.

Ruby crowned kinglet.

  A.K.A. a fast mover. Always find it difficult to get a good image as they bounce around the branches so fast. Rondeau Provincial Park, Ontario, Canada, May 6, 2024. Corthylio calendula The Ruby-crowned Kinglet is a tiny bird that lays a very large clutch of eggs—there can be up to 12 in a single nest. Although the eggs themselves weigh only about a fiftieth of an ounce, an entire clutch can weigh as much as the female herself. source- allaboutbirds-org.

Yellow warbler.

 In a few weeks it will be - just another yellow- but for now it is great story see. Rondeau Provincial Park, Ontario, Canada, May 5. 2024. Setophaga petechia.  Yellow Warblers eat mostly insects, so they don’t come to backyard feeders. Larger yards that have small trees or are near streams may provide nesting habitat for these birds. source-allaboutbirds-org

Size comparison

 Not a great photo but it was almost dark and sometimes you have to use what you got. The white-throated weighs in at approximately .7 to 1.3 ounces and is about 15 to 19 centimetres (5.9 to 7.5 inches) in length. The blue-winged warbler weighs around 0.3 ounce and is in the 11-12 cm (4.3 to 4.7 inch) in length. Rondeau Provincial Park, Ontario, Canada, May 2, 2024.

Rondeau Provincial Park, Ontario, Canada, May 2, 2024.  Second warbler of the season to have a bath, the other was a yellow warbler. Vermivora cyanoptera Blue-winged Warblers hybridize extensively with Golden-winged Warblers, giving rise to two distinctive and fairly commonly seen hybrids: "Brewster's" and "Lawrence's" warblers. Brewster's have golden wingbars and a white belly (Golden-winged features), but a white throat (a Blue-winged feature). Lawrence's have a black throat (a Golden-winged feature), but white wingbars and a yellow belly (Blue-winged features) . source -allaboutbirds-org
