This is the Cercropia caterpillar and it is 55 mm long. About the size and thickness of a thumb.

This gull sat staring at the sand bank for about 4 minutes, then it started to look around. The bonaparte gulls seemed to be shunning it.

Anne found this caterpillar while looking for something else.
It was feeding on a plant called a tick tre foil.

anybody know what it is? It is about 1 inch (2.5cm) long.

Another one that I can't find in our field guides.
About 1 1/2 inches (4cm?) long he was undulating his way across the back step.
The cat was fascinated and so was I.
